Welcome to the Under 9s for the new 2020/21 season!
We have a strong squad of boys and girls carrying on from the under 8s, but we could do with recruiting a few more so that we can run more teams. We have a lot of fun at U9 and our coaches will pass on the skills and ethos of rugby with a variety of small sided games and skill sessions designed to ensure full participation, fitness and enjoyment.
At U9 our rugby players normally begin a transition towards contact rugby with the introduction of the tackle (no more tags).
In the aftermath of COVID-19 mini rugby is currently being played as a non-contact game, so the focus for us in the early part of the season will be on key non-contact skills. But in the hope that we'll get onto contact at some point, we can reassure parents that the transition is gentle, with a focus on making sure that our boys and girls learn how to tackle safely – below the chest without contesting the ball. The ball carrier is not allowed to hand-off or to use the ball to fend-off a tackler allowing a fair contest between players of all shapes and sizes. Once a player is held or brought to the ground then the ref shouts ‘tackle’ and the ball is shipped to another player (7 a side); this keeps the game flowing in the same way that we enjoyed during tag.
The format will be new to everyone; players who have played before can build on the skills that they have developed while new players have a chance to catch up as we all learn the new things together. Boys and girls born between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012 inclusive welcome!
We play most Sundays between September and April at the Bank of England Sports Club. In a normal season we have regular home and away visits with local competition and 3 larger festivals during the season.
